The storming of the United States Capital. What happened and its aftereffects

On Wednesday, January 6th, 2021, a mob stormed the United States capital and took over the House and Senate chambers while congress was certifying the election. Many members of the house and senate described the scene as chaotic. “There must be accountability” Cory Booker (D-NJ) says about the riots at the capital.

Joe Biden strongly condemned the violence, and said in a speech “Let me be very clear: the scenes of chaos at the Capitol do not represent who we are. What we are seeing is a small number of extremists dedicated to lawlessness. This is not dissent, it’s disorder. It borders on sedition, and it must end. Now.”

While evacuated from the capital, Ilhan Omar and other representatives started drafting articles of impeachment. The released articles say that Donald Trump is impeached because “On a recorded call, he rependely asked Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to overturn the finalized and verified results of the November 2020 Presidential election in the state of Georgia” and “Donald John Trump has abused the powers of the Presidency to incite violence and orchestrate an attempted coup against our country.”

Since the riot at the capital, several key cabinet members such as Betsy DeVos (education secretary) and Elaine Chao (transportation secretary) have resigned, and more members are expected to follow.

If impeachment passeses, Donald Trump would no longer be able to hold office in the United States.  It is also rumored in the early hours of January 7th, 2021, Mike Pence and other white house officials talked about the 25th amendment, which gives the power to the vice president and the president’s cabinet to remove Donald Trump from office if he is “unable to lead”. On January 7th, 2021, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Shumer, republican and democrats alike have called on Mike pence to use the 25th amendment. Additionally, Nancy Pelosi said if Mike Pence does not invoke the 25th amendment, she will proceed with impeachment. He would be the first president to be impeached twice. Ilhan Omar says that it is extremely likely that impeachment will be brought to the floor on January 8th, 2021, but it is not confirmed.

More updates will be coming, as well as a deeper look into this situation.
